One Killed In Alleged DUI In South Houston

A crash at a south Houston intersection killed one driver and sent two passengers to the hospital.

According to Click 2 Houston, this crash happened before 2AM between College Avenue and Easthaven Boulevard. Allegedly, a teenage pickup truck driver slammed her vehicle into an SUV.

Sadly, the woman driving the SUV was killed on impact. First-responders were able to transport the two SUV passengers—including a one-year-old boy—to a local hospital.

Houston police are still investigating this crash, but they believe the teenager may have been driving under the influence.

Texas DUI Fatalities Are Above National Average

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that just under 10,500 Americans were killed in DUI-related crashes in 2016. That accounts for approximately 30 percent of all traffic fatalities in the USA.

In this 2016 report, Texas had a total of 3,776 fatalities. In 1,438 of these fatal crashes, one driver had a blood-alcohol content (BAC) above 0.08 and 949 had a BAC above 0.15. The only other states that came close to Texas’s DUI fatality figures were Florida and California.

According to Crary, Clark, Domanico, & Chuang, P.S., 28 people die every day in the United States due to crashes that involve alcohol-impaired drivers.
