Crash In Houston Injures Pedestrian And Driver
A car crash in eastern Houston on April 14, 2019 sent one pedestrian and one motorist to the hospital.
According to the Houston Chronicle, this crash happened at about 2AM on Clinton Drive. Allegedly, one driver traveling westbound struck a pedestrian nearby North Carolina Street. After hitting the pedestrian, the motorist apparently lost control of his vehicle and hit a nearby tree.
When police arrived on the scene, they quickly transported the driver and pedestrian to local hospitals. Both people involved in this crash are expected to survive their injuries.
How Good Is Pedestrian Safety In Texas?
A new report put out by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) found that Texas is one of the worst states in the nation for pedestrian deaths. In 2018, the Lone Star State ranked third in the nation for traffic-related pedestrian fatalities.
From January till June of 2018, over 6,200 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes across the USA. Unfortunately, that’s one of the highest fatality figures ever recorded in recent history.
The GHSA notes that there were about 265 pedestrian deaths in Texas between January and June of 2017. In 2018, that number rose to 300 fatalities.
There’s no clear answer why Texas has such high pedestrian fatality figures, but analysts note it could be due to the population increase in big cities like Houston. Some GHSA workers also believe these figures could be related to the rise in distracted driving and higher SUV sales.
